With delegated authority from Lloyd’s and Great Lakes, we can make underwriting decisions for US wholesale brokers and managing general agents at our desks. No referral upwards or outwards – all of our underwriting decisions are made in-house with the minimum of fuss.

We take a long-term view of operating in our chosen business classes, both in our underwriting discipline and in our commitment to these classes. We have built up decades of experience in our markets and we look forward to building up many decades more.

We specialise in Excess and Surplus Lines markets and with our extensive underwriting experience and capability, all risks and classes are considered on their own merits.

Depending on the risk, we have maximum per risk capacity of $25m and can consider All Risks excluding or including Earthquake and Flood, Mono line Wind/Hail (including 1st Tier), full value or primary/excess layers and deductible buy-down.

Investor Owned Property


We have a specialist facility for Investor Owned Property schedules of 10 or more locations up to a TIV of $100m. We can also offer General Liability coverage for those requiring a package option. The facility is nationwide with capacity available in all territories.

We look for experienced investors who either manage their own portfolios or employ a management company and can demonstrate good housekeeping and maintenance procedures. The product is for single family dwellings for long term rental as we do not write apartment or condominium complexes under this facility.

High Value Homes


Our access to Lloyd’s and Great Lakes allows us to review and consider all risks including wildfire exposures along with coastal exposure and remote and high protection class risks. We can consider a variety of occupancies including: Primary, Secondary, Seasonal, Tenanted, Short Term rental, Vacant and Construction exposures.

We can place up to $19.5m any one declaration via our exclusive joint certificate arrangement splitting risks between our markets. We hold a considerable amount of underwriting authority for both markets which enables us to provide a timely response in the event of a pressured submission.

Auto Physical Damage:

We can underwrite commercial and private passenger, short and long-haul operations, from single units to medium/large sized fleets, including trailer interchange, hired auto and towing / storage.

Coverage can be on a scheduled or reporting basis depending on fleet size.

Motor Truck Cargo:

We have a broad appetite in this sector and can consider a wide range of commodities. Coverages are available for single to large fleets and terminal exposures and can be on a scheduled or reporting basis, depending on fleet size. We also have the ability to write excess of loss or primary coverages.

Our online portal provides full quote, bind and policy issuance for APD/MTC as well as allowing full endorsement servicing. This has the added bonus of also enabling Bell & Clements to effectively handle those smaller risks that a number of markets cannot consider due to large minimum premiums.

Dealers Open Lot:

We underwrite all types of new or used auto dealerships (both retail and wholesale) involved in the selling of autos and other related units including – but not limited to – boat dealers, emergency vehicle dealers, heavy truck dealers, trailer dealers and RV dealers.

False pretence, furnished auto, temporary lot location and unaccompanied test drives are available as additional coverages. Coverage can be considered in all States and on a primary or excess basis.

Garage Keeper's Legal Liability:

We can underwrite legal liability and direct primary coverage for auto repair/service risks, on hook, storage risks, valet & other related parking operations, auction facilities, drive away operations and other care, custody and control type risks.
