Nick Ash

Chief Executive Officer

Nick Ash is Chief Executive Officer of Bell & Clements Limited. He joined Bell & Clements in 2016 and took over CEO responsibilities in January 2017.

Nick was previously the founding partner of Grosvenor Brokers and oversaw the growth of the business and its subsequent sale to AssuredPartners, Inc. becoming CEO of AssuredPartners in 2015.

He commenced his insurance career in 1988 and has extensive experience of the London, European and Bermudian marketplaces.

Ian Whitehead

Chief Operating Officer

Ian Whitehead is Chief Operating Officer and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the business and for major projects. He was the leading influence behind Bell & Clements’ pioneering data administration system, The Bridge.

Ian joined Bell & Clements Limited in 1998 as IT Manager, before being promoted to IT Director/Board Member in 2001. He was appointed as COO in 2013. Prior to joining Bell & Clements, Ian worked for 14 years in the insurance technology sector where he was a Senior Consultant for a market leading insurance software vendor.

He was a member of the US based AAMGA Automation Committee and has a BSc (Hons) Degree in Computer Science.

Chet Shah

Financial Director

Chet Shah is Finance Director. He joined Bell & Clements in 1996 from Deloitte, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant and was an Audit Manager in its insurance group. Chet has been involved in all financial aspects of Bell & Clements’ growth and development.

Chet has a BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Manchester.

Mike Kyriacou

Director of Underwriting

Mike Kyriacou is Director of Underwriting and has overall responsibility for the company's day-to-day underwriting as well as its managed underwriting functions.

Mike joined Bell & Clements in 2002 having previously worked in the Lloyd's market for over 25 years as an underwriter for a number of Lloyd's syndicates. He spent his first two years at Bell & Clements in the US helping to establish the Bell & Clements Inc. office in Reston, VA, and assisting the company develop its underwriting management capabilities.

Mike was heavily involved in establishing the business relationship with Bell & Clements’ customers and American Modern Insurance Group, and was instrumental in the roll out of the Great Lakes facility.

Dawn Harding

Director of Broking

Dawn Harding is Director of Broking and has over 30 years’ Lloyd’s binding authority experience. She is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Lloyd’s US Binding Authority department and was appointed as a Director of the Bell & Clements Board in 2013.

Dawn joined Bell & Clements in 1989, having previously worked for another Lloyd’s broker handling the production and placement of Canadian binding authorities.

Luke Wheeler

Claims Director

Luke Wheeler is Claims Director and has in excess of 20 years’ claims broking and technical experience. He is responsible for the business’ claims strategy and policies and manages the day-to-day operations of the claims team, which is spread between our UK and US offices.

Luke joined Bell & Clements Limited in 1994 as a Junior Claims Broker/Technician and rose to Department Manager by 2005. Luke was appointed as a Director of the Bell & Clements Board in 2013.

Verena Schmitz

Director of Strategy

Verena Schmitz is Director of Strategy at Bell & Clements Limited. She joined Bell & Clements in February 2017 and also holds Board responsibility for HR and Technical.

Before joining B&C, she was Chief Underwriting Officer / Chief Operating Officer for Great Lakes facilitated business and responsible for the business development of its delegated authorities.

Verena joined the Munich Re group in 2001 and held various senior functions. She has a BBA (Hons) Degree in European Business.

Mark Balcombe

Chief Technology Officer

Mark Balcombe is the Chief Technology Officer, and he has overall responsibility for the day-to-day operations within the IT Department.

Mark joined Bell & Clements in 2001 and has project led many of the business’ major IT initiatives, including implementing a broking system and migrating paper files to a document management system. He was appointed an Associate Director in 2007 and joined the Board of Directors in 2019.

Prior to joining Bell & Clements, Mark worked for 17 years in the insurance technology sector for a leading insurance software vendor. Mark’s experience spans all aspects of the insurance technology sector, from programming and technical support through to account and project management. Mark has worked on many international customer accounts and with a number of London Market insurance brokers.

Bharat Mepani

Chief Innovation Officer

Bharat Mepani is the Chief Innovation Officer for Bell & Clements and is responsible for managing the Software Development and Data Analytics teams.

Bharat has been instrumental in designing, enhancing and managing Bell & Clements’ data processing and analytics system, The Bridge. He works closely with customers and their software vendors to obtain validated real-time data via XML and provides in-depth insurance analytics to both internal and external audiences.

He joined Bell & Clements in 2002 as a Software Engineer and was promoted to Development Manager in 2007 and Associate Director in 2011. Bharat joined the Board of Directors in 2019.

Bharat has a BSc (Hons) Degree in Computer Science.

Reinhold Betzler

Non-Executive Director

Reinhold Betzler has served as non-executive director for Bell & Clements since 2013, representing Munich Re.

Reinhold is the Head of Property Treaty Underwriting at Munich Re for Global Clients, US Clients and Lloyd’s. He has over twenty years of insurance industry experience in non-life underwriting, with an emphasis on property treaties.
